چکیده

Two classes of neutron stars may exist in the galactic halo: neutron stars originating in the disk with high velocities and neutron stars originating in globular clusters (via Type II supernovae and/or accretion induced collapse). Moreover, the halo dark matter is likely in the form of dark clusters composed of MACHOs and cold molecular clouds. Here we propose a model in which neutron stars crossing dark clusters in the galactic halo accrete material and emit in the X-ray band. The detection of these X-ray sources whose luminosity can span several orders of magnitude from ∼ 1033 to ∼ 1037 erg s−1 could be already done by ROSAT.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

The Quiescent Emission Spectrum of Cen X-4 and Other X-ray Transients Containing Neutron Stars

We use the observed optical-UV and X-ray emission spectrum of Cen X-4 during quiescence to constrain models for the accretion flow in this system. We argue that the optical-UV emission is not due to an optically-thick quiescent accretion disk, nor due to synchrotron emission from an Advection-Dominated Accretion Flow (ADAF). Emission from the bright spot could account for the observed optical-U...

A Search for Hard X-Ray Emission from Globular Clusters - Constraints from BATSE

We have monitored a sample of 27 nearby globular clusters in the hard X-ray band (20 − 120 keV) for ∼1400 days using the BATSE instrument on board the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory. Globular clusters may contain a large number of compact objects (e.g., pulsars or X-ray binaries containing neutron stars) which can produce hard Xray emission. Our search provides a sensitive (∼50 mCrab) monitor fo...

An Unusual X-ray Burst from the Globular Cluster M28

We report the discovery of an unusual X-ray burst from the direction of the Globular Cluster M28 using data acquired with the ASCA Observatory. The burst was recorded by all four ASCA telescopes and displays a fast ( <∼ 70 ms) rise followed by an exponential decay (τ = 7.5 s) and a steady afterglow which lasts between 800 – 3250 s. The image of the burst is consistent with an ASCA point source ...
